Ruth Gagnon Shaw may be the quintessential example of the caliber of student-athletes that the University of New England has had in the past and continues to have to this day. During her time at St. Francis College and UNE, Shaw was a member of the soccer, volleyball and basketball teams.

She ranks among the basketball program’s career scoring leaders, and holds several single-game records. In addition, her jersey number was retired.

After graduating from UNE in 1984, Shaw went on to work as a chemical laboratory director for 10 years. She currently teaches chemistry at Biddeford High School where she has worked for the past 14 years. In addition, seven years ago, Ruth started a varsity girl’s volleyball team at the High School, and continues to serve as head coach. She also serves as a girls' volleyball instructor for the Biddeford Recreation Department’s youth sports programs.

More than 20 years after graduating with her bachelor’s degree from UNE, Ruth enrolled again at the University, this time earning her certificate of advanced graduate study in education in 2003.
