WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of New England women's basketball team erupted in the fourth quarter, outscoring the University of Hartford by a margin of 26-4 to secure a 60-50 Conference of New England victory in comeback fashion on Saturday afternoon inside Chase Family Arena.
The Nor'easters (12-9, 10-2), earning their sixth straight victory, were led by
Sydney Jenisch's game-high 21 points, 12 of which came during the UNE-dominated fourth. Jenisch was 8-for-14 from the field and 3-for-5 from deep.
UNE entered the fourth quarter facing a 46-34 deficit, but grabbed the lead on Jenisch's bucket at the 4:10 mark. Minutes earlier, the Nor'easters drained 3-pointers on three straight possessions – one from
Gabby Soter, then two from Jenisch – to turn the tide in favor of the visitors. Between those two triples, and a two more baskets, including the go-ahead score, Jenisch accounted for 10 consecutive points midway through the frame.
UNE had the upperhand in outside shooting, hitting seven of its 19 attempts, while Hartford (12-10, 9-4) connected on just four of 25. Both sides were nearly identical from the floor, with the Nor'easters going 22-for-55 and the Hawks hitting one less shot on the same number of attempts. Hartford claimed a 37-32 edge on the glass – captained by Lauren Sabia's 10 boards – but turned the ball over 16 times, three more than UNE committed.
Allie Shenloogian was the Hawks' leading scorer with 17, while Sabia rounded out her double-double with 16 points.
UNE's cold shooting in the middle two quarters, having gone 6-for-26 from the floor in the second and third quarters combined, helped Hartford build its second-half lead. The third quarter heavily sided with the Hawks, 20-8, but the Nor'easters caught fire in the fourth, hitting nine of 14 from the field, including three of four from downtown.
Soter scored 10 points as the only other UNE player in double figures, aside from Jenisch, and pulled down a team-best eight rebounds.
Grace Boucher and
Kaia Anderson contributed eight points apiece.
The Nor'easters will look to continue their win streak back home on Wednesday, Feb. 11 when they host Endicott, which will enter the game with a 9-3 conference mark. Tip-off on Coach Beaudry's Court is set for 5:30 p.m.
