BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Aleah Bracey buried a 3-pointer from the left corner with 23.9 seconds remaining to break a 67-67 tie and help Endicott College to a 73-67 come-from-behind victory over the University of New England in Conference of New England women's basketball action Wednesday evening (Feb. 11) at Coach Beaudry's Court inside the Harold Alfond Forum.
Limited to 22 points in the opening half and trailing by 13, the Gulls (14-8, 10-3 CNE) flipped the scoreboard by pouring in 51 points over the final 20 minutes, including 30 in the decisive fourth quarter. Endicott never had a lead over the initial 35 minutes until Bracey converted a fast-break opportunity give the visitors their first advantage at 58-57.Â
From that point forward the contest featured four more lead changes.
Paige Meda returned UNE to the lead (60-58) on its next possession, knocking down a trey before Tenley Wallin canned a triple on the ensuing possession to give the Gulls the lead again at 61-60. That was short-lived, however, as
Sydney Jenisch nailed a jumper followed by a 3-pointer to put the hosts back on top (65-61) with just over three minutes remaining.
After Tricia Wladkowski made 1 of 2 at the line for Endicott, Emma Shinney converted a fast-break layup to get the Gulls within one (65-64) with 2:33 on the clock. UNE missed a 3-point attempt on its next trip up the floor, and Bracey responded from distance to give Endicott a 67-65 advantage.
Maddy Werner knocked down a fair of free throws with 1:36 left to draw the Nor'easters even (67-67) again, setting up Bracey's clutch three-ball inside of 30 seconds.Â
UNE came up empty on its ensuing possession and was forced to foul Endicott four times to put the Gulls at the free throw line. Alyssa Garabedian made 1 of 2 with 10 seconds remaining and Wladkowksi converted a pair of attempts with five ticks left to ice the game.
Wallin was 8 of 13 from the floor on her way to a team-high 20 points for the Gulls. Shinney was all over the court, registering a triple-double (16 points, 17 rebounds, 11 assists) and adding four steals. Bracey poured in 13 of her 15 points after halftime, and Wladkowksi contributed 13 points and six boards.
Gabby Soter played her strongest game of the year for UNE, going for 20 points (7-13 FGA), eight rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals. Jenisch (12),
Kaia Anderson (11) and Werner (10) each scored in double digits. Anderson added six caroms and two steals.
Soter poured in 14 points in the first half to guide UNE to its 13-point cushion. The Nor'easters shot 44.9 percent (13 of 29) from the floor, while the Gulls struggled to 25 percent (8 of 32) accuracy.
The reigning CNE champion, Endicott earned a key conference decision, and in the process, halted UNE's six-game win streak. The Gulls, Nor'easters and Western New England University now sit tied for second place in the league standings, two games behind front-runner Johnson & Wales University.
