  • 19th season as UNE Head Coach (2025-26); 359-128 after 18 seasons [Year-by-Year]
Anthony Ewing took over the UNE women's basketball program in 2007, and turned the Nor'easters into one of the elite programs in the region. His teams have racked up a 359-128 record (.737) over the last 18 seasons. Through 2023-24, his overall winning percentage ranked 17th among active coaches in Division III.

From 2008-09 through 2017-18 (10 years), UNE was one of only five Division III programs (out of 400+) to win at least 20 games during each season (along with Hope College, DePauw University, Thomas More College, Amherst College). During that same time frame, just two of the 80+ New England programs had larger victory totals than UNE's 236 -- Amherst (301) and Tufts University (253).

Eight of UNE's nine appearances in the NCAA Championship have come under Ewing, which included the University's first-ever at-large selection to a national tournament in 2012. Big Blue reached the 2nd Round of play in three consecutive years (2013, 2014, 2015), and the berth in 2016 included hosting rights to the initial two rounds.

UNE has won the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) title seven times (2010, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018), and reached the final on three other occasions. The Nor'easters have dominated the CCC regular-season schedule to the tune of a 235-45 record (.839), with 10 outright or shared regular-season titles and two perfect 18-0 campaigns.

In six of the conference championship victory seasons, Ewing was named the CCC Coach of the Year (2009-10, 2012-13, 2013-14, 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18). He has also been selected for a similar honor by the Maine Women's Basketball Coaches Association two times (2013-14, 2015-16), and has once received the WBCA Region 1 Coach of the Year (2015-16) award as well as the New England Women's Basketball Association Coach of the Year (2013-14).

The program first achieved a national ranking in 2013-14, spending the last five weeks of the season in the WBCA Division III Top 25 Coaches Poll to finish at #20. Since then, UNE has seen considerable time in both the Coaches Poll and the D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll. The 2014-15 year ended at WBCA #25, and 2015-16 wrapped up at WBCA #19 and D3hoops #22. The Nor'easters topped out at #10 (D3hoops) and #13 (WBCA) during the 2015-16 season.

Additionally during 2014-15, UNE wound up #9 in the WBCA Division III Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll with a combined 3.553 grade point average. No other squad in the country was listed among the final Top 25 for both academics and competition that year.

Four times since Ewing arrived in Biddeford, the Nor'easters have established a new single-season record for victories, up from the 20 that stood back in 1989-90. The current mark is now at 27 games (against 3 losses) from 2013-14, and Big Blue has twice rattled off a program-best 20 wins in-a-row (2012-13, 2015-16).

Before UNE, Ewing was at Brandeis University [NCAA III], where he served as Associate Head Coach for six seasons. The Judges twice advanced to the 2nd Round of the NCAA Championship with his help, and he was noted as a member of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Coaching Staff of the Year in 2004-05. Prior to his tenure at Brandeis, Ewing spent five years as the top assistant at his alma mater -- Keene State College [NCAA III].

Ewing resides in Biddeford with his three daughters -- Hailey (who has completed her first year at UNE), Kelsey, and Riley. The Portland, Maine native earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education with a specialization in sports management from KSC in 1995.
