PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Johnson & Wales University built a first-half lead and maintained control down the stretch, leading wire-to-wire in a 64-52 Conference of New England victory over the University of New England women's basketball team Saturday afternoon inside the Wildcat Center.
JWU's two-pronged attack of Grace Jaffray and Isabella Suero combined for 41 points. Jaffray was the game's leading scorer with 21, having hit 3-of-6 from deep while grabbing six rebounds. Suero knocked down four triples (4-for-10), helping the Wildcats (11-4, 5-1) go 9-for-27 as a team. The perimeter was less kind to the Nor'easters (6-9, 4-2), who were 4-for-21 on the day.
Sydney Jenisch led UNE with 15 points as the only Nor'easter in double figures.
Hannah Blanchard led both sides on the glass, pulling down a career-high 10 rebounds. Despite Blanchard's efforts, the Wildcats still managed a slight edge on the boards, 42-41.
UNE was held to just three first-half field goals as JWU rolled into halftime with a 31-14 lead. The visitors gained some momentum offensively in the third quarter, hitting 7-of-15 from the field, but still faced a 20-point deficit entering the fourth quarter.
The Nor'easters are back home on Tuesday, Jan. 20, hosting Wentworth at 5:30 p.m.
