BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England scored the first eight points of the contest and never looked back on its way to an 85-32 win over visiting Wentworth Institute of Technology in Conference of New England women's basketball action Tuesday evening (Jan. 20) at Coach Beaudry's Court inside the Harold Alfond Forum.
UNE's scoring output of 85 points was its highest since an 87-60 triumph over Gordon College last February, and its largest margin of victory since topping Wentworth by 53 during the 2021-22 season. The Nor'easters (7-9, 5-2 CNE) are now a perfect 34-0 versus the Leopards under the watch of 19th-year head coach
Anthony Ewing.
Kaia Anderson paced a balanced UNE offense with a game-high 16 points. She made 7 of 12 field goal attempts and added four assists. First-year
Hannah Blanchard scored a career-best 15 points on a 7-for-9 performance from the floor, while
Hannah Cook added 10 points for her high output of the campaign.
Maddy Werner made all four of her shots to finish with eight points, and
Allie Dwyer played a strong all-around contest, contributing five points, seven rebounds, six assists and four steals.
Mia Luna Zayas led Wentworth (1-16, 0-9) with 13 points, including four makes from beyond the arc.
UNE scorched the nets in the first quarter to build a 23-10 lead, connecting on 71.4 percent (10 of 14) of its attempts from the field. The Nor'easters doubled up WIT 20-10 in the second frame to take a commanding 43-20 bulge into the break. UNE went on to shoot 54.5 percent (18 of 33) after halftime to win going away.Â
The Nor'easters racked up some impressive numbers on the stat sheet, limiting the visitors to 25.5 percent field goal accuracy (12 of 47) while forcing 21 Wentworth turnovers. UNE also had 48 points in the paint, 47 points from its bench personnel, and a total of 14 players found their way into the scoring column.
Next up for the Nor'easters is a Saturday road game at Nichols College. The two squads met back on Jan. 3 when UNE came away with a 68-48 win in Biddeford.
