BIDDEFORD, Maine – Endicott hit a game-tying 3-pointer in the final seconds of regulation before closing out a 59-57 victory over the University of New England women's basketball team in overtime of Wednesday evening's Conference of New England nail-biter on Coach Beaudry's Court.
UNE held a 50-47 advantage before Cora Nadeau delivered the game-tying triple for the Gulls with less than four seconds remaining before Endicott led the majority of the extra session to come away with the victory.
Maddy Werner enjoyed career-high performances in both scoring and rebounding, earning her first collegiate double-double with 18 points and 11 boards.
Sydney Jenisch followed in the scoring column with 12 points, and
Gabby Soter was another Nor'easter with double-digit rebounds, finishing with 10. Nadeau, who knocked down five 3-pointers, matched Werner with 18 points to pace the Gulls, and Libby Fleming had an 11-point, 12-rebound double-double.
UNE was just 1-for-9 from beyond the arc to Endicott's 7-for-34, but saw nearly twice as many opportunities at the free throw line. The Gulls boasted a 57-48 advantage on the glass.
Endicott's cold first-half shooting, starting with a 3-for-19 showing from the field in the opening quarter, helped the Nor'easters lead by as much as eight in the early going. A 3-pointer by Jenisch, the team's lone triple of the evening, handed the Nor'easters a 21-13 advantage late in the second quarter, which would match the largest lead of the night for either side.
After facing a 24-18 deficit at halftime, the Gulls hung around before taking advantage of back-to-back Nadeau triples to tie the game, 44-44, with less than a minute remaining in regulation. With both sides trading free throws, UNE held a 48-47 lead and sent
Grace Boucher to the line, where she knocked down both to give the Nor'easters a crucial 3-point lead. Endicott looked to Nadeau once again on its final possession, nailing a triple from the corner to force overtime.
UNE had a 53-52 advantage early in overtime after a 3-point play by Werner, but the Gulls reclaimed the lead on the ensuing possession with a bucket from Sofia Mazzotta, and they wouldn't trail again.
The Nor'easters are back home on Saturday, Feb. 8 to host Gordon at 1 p.m.
