LEWISTON, Maine -- Lily Brown came off the bench to pour in 12 of her game-high 18 points in the first quarter to jump-start the Bates College scoring attack, as the No. 10 Bobcats cruised to an 88-56 non-conference women's basketball win over the University of New England Sunday afternoon (Nov. 30) at Alumni Gymnasium.
With Bates (5-0) scoreless for more than four minutes to start the game, Brown made all four of her three-point field goal attempts in the opening frame to ignite the Bobcats' offense on their way to a 21-10 advantage after one. Brown capped the outburst with a trey at the buzzer.
The two squads were evenly-matched in the second quarter, with the Bobcats carrying a 41-28 advantage into intermission.
Bates would put the contest away in the third, shooting a scalding 80 percent (12 of 15) from the floor, while limiting the Nor'easters to 19 percent (3 of 16) accuracy.
The scoring column was balanced for the Bobcats, with Sophie Spolter (11 points) joining Brown as the only Bates' players to reach double digits. Gabby Bellacqua and Claire Gaetani scored nine points apiece, while Elsa Daulerio and Londyn Perry each logged eight.
Sydney Jenisch and
Kaia Anderson finished with 14 points apiece to pace the Nor'easters. Jenisch nailed three shots from distance to reach double figures in points for the sixth time in seven outings. Anderson grabbed a team-best six rebounds, and her scoring output was a season high.
Grace Boucher had seven points, which included a 4-for-4 performance at the free throw line.
Bates' impressive stat sheet included 52.9 percent (36 of 68) accuracy from the floor, a rebounding margin of 16 (41-25), and 64 points from its bench.
The Nor'easters (2-5) will look to snap a three-game losing skid Wednesday (Dec. 3) when Gordon College comes to Biddeford for UNE's Conference of New England opener. Tip time at Coach Beaudry's Court is slated for 5:30 p.m.
