WPI overcomes sluggish start to down Nor'easters

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Trailing 16-2 after one quarter, the Worcester Polytechnic Institute women's basketball team outscored the University of New England 38-17 over the next two frames to rally for a 58-47 non-conference victory Tuesday evening (Nov. 25) at Harrington Auditorium.

Ava Giansiracusa paced a balanced Engineer scoring attack with 14 points. Siracusa nailed three treys while also contributing six rebounds and three assists. Ava Hyams and Emmy Allyn each went for 11 points and combined for 13 boards. 

Sydney Jenisch was the lone UNE player to reach double digits in the scoring column, finishing with a game-best 15 points on 7-for-15 accuracy from the floor. Emily Picher accounted for nine points and Hannah Blanchard eight.

After making just one field goal in the opening quarter, WPI made 8 of 15 attempts in the second to cut its deficit to three (26-23) heading into the locker room. 

The Engineers grabbed the lead for good (29-28) on a layup by Megan Stone with 7:08 remaining in the third stanza. WPI would go on to extend its advantage, pushing the cushion to 40-33 to set up the final 10 minutes.

The Nor'easters were unable to get any closer than five the rest of the way.

WPI (3-2) was dominant on the glass, piling up a 48-23 margin in the rebounding column. The Engineers converted 17 offensive caroms into 16 second-chance points. The hosts shot a solid 41.2 percent from the floor (21 of 51).

UNE turned the ball over just eight times but made only 18 of 57 field goal attempts (31.6 percent).

The Nor'easters (2-4) will break for the Thanksgiving holiday before heading to Lewiston Sunday to take on No. 10 Bates College. Tip time is slated for 3 p.m.
