DARTMOUTH, Mass. –
Sydney Jenisch scored a game-high 21 points to power the University of New England women's basketball team to a 57-48 win over Wesleyan on Saturday, the opening day of the Lafrance Hospitality Tournament hosted by the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth.
Jenisch's second 20-point performance of the season helped the Nor'easters (2-2) secure their second consecutive victory. In addition to Jenisch's offensive production, first-year
Hannah Blanchard contributed nine points, and fellow rookie
Paige Meda scored seven as one of three Nor'easters to finish with five rebounds (Jenisch and
Ella Karavanic being the other two).
Olivia Quinn paced the Cardinals (2-1) with 17 points, while Alli Jones finished with 12 in addition to her game-high 11 rebounds.
Aside from efficient performances from Jenisch and Quinn, neither side enjoyed a strong shooting day, but UNE was more successful at the free throw line, knocking down 12-of-13 to Wesleyan's 6-for-9.
Kaia Anderson's bucket at the end of second quarter gave the Nor'easters a 28-27 edge entering halftime following a back-and-forth start, and UNE began to build a lead midway through the third with a 7-0 run that was capped off by a Karavanic 3-pointer at the 3:36 mark. Despite the Cardinals hanging around for the rest of the afternoon, the Nor'easters maintained at least a one-possession lead down the stretch, ultimately holding Wesleyan to just 21 second-half points.
With nine different UNE players entering the scoring column, the Nor'easters earned a lopsided 24-3 advantage in bench points.
UNE will wrap up the two-day stretch at UMass Dartmouth on Sunday, facing Emerson in another neutral-site contest at noon.
