UNE downs SJC for first win

BIDDEFORD, Maine – The University of New England pulled away from Saint Joseph's College of Maine during the third quarter of Wednesday evening's non-conference women's basketball contest on Coach Beaudry's Court, eventually running away with a 73-50 victory – the Nor'easters' first of the season.
 
After leading 29-23 at halftime, UNE (1-2) outscored SJC (2-3) 26-12 during the third quarter, including an 11-0 run that the Nor'easters on top by 20 by the end of the frame. UNE's lead grew as large as 25 during the fourth quarter.
 
Sydney Jenisch earned the first double-double of her career with 18 points – matching SJC's Hayden Madore for the game high – and a career-best 11 rebounds. First-years Paige Meda and Emily Picher also scored in double figures for UNE with 11 and 10, respectively. Hannah Blanchard, another first-year, was just a bucket away from joining those ranks, finishing with eight points in addition to her six rebounds.
 
Meda played a key role in the Nor'easters' explosive third quarter, scoring 10 of her 11 points during that stretch on 4-of-5 shooting. Picher had six points in the third with a pair of 3-pointers.
 
The Monks were held to just 15 made field goals (15-for-57), but stayed afloat early by getting to the free throw line. They were 7-for-8 from the stripe during the first quarter and finished the night 17-for-23, but the Nor'easters were more efficient with their chances (16-for-19). UNE dominated the glass, 56-36.
 
UNE, which never trailed on Wednesday evening, opened the game with a 12-0 run. It wasn't until the game was inside the 6-minute mark that SJC was able to get on the board, but the Monks were able to climb back as close as four in the first quarter before Hannah Cook hit from deep in the final seconds to send the Nor'easters into the second with a 19-12 edge. UNE threatened to run away with the second quarter, leading 27-14 with three minutes until halftime, but the Monks pulled together a 9-2 run to stay within striking distance at halftime.
 
Riding the momentum of the season's first win, UNE heads to UMass Dartmouth for the Lafrance Hospitality Tournament. The Nor'easters will square off with Wesleyan in neutral-site game on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 2 p.m.
