Game Highlights
BIDDEFORD, Maine – Clark University held off the University of New England's fourth-quarter surge to escape with a 61-58 non-conference women's basketball victory in the Nor'easters' home opener on Monday night on Coach Beaudry's Court inside the Harold Alfond Forum.
Clark (5-0) led by as many as 17 late in the third quarter, and had a 53-41 lead entering the fourth, but the Nor'easters (0-2) still had a shot to tie the game with 14 seconds left, with possession and facing a three-point deficit. The Cougars were able to seal a win with a pair of UNE 3-point attempts missing the mark.
Cyriah Coleman, who went 10-for-10 at the free throw line, paced Clark with 19 points and six rebounds – both game highs. Catherine Antwi followed with 12. The Cougars were enjoying an efficient night from the field, having shot nearly 50 percent in each of the first three quarters before being held to just 2-for-12 during the fourth, and 0-for-3 from deep. The late shooting woes were aided by a stellar showing from the charity stripe (17-for-18 on the night).
Ella Karavanic was UNE's leading scorer, matching her career high with 14 points. First-year
Emily Picher was a key contributor with 13, including a clutch 3-pointer that cut the Cougars' lead to one (59-58) with 15 seconds remaining. The Nor'easters also shot well from the free throw line (14-for-16), but after a 3-for-8 start from deep in the first quarter, struggled to hit from the perimeter, going 1-for-12 during the second half to finish 6-for-24.
Picher's triple capped off a 24-8 UNE run that bridged the last few minutes of the third and the entirety of the fourth to that point, giving the Nor'easters a chance to complete the comeback in the final moments. Coleman was sent to the line for Clark on the ensuing possession and knocked down two of her 10 free throws as the Cougars clung to a three-point advantage. UNE's cold second-half outside shooting proved costly on their final possession of the night.
The Nor'easters will have a quick turnaround, hosting Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Wednesday, Nov. 19 at 6 p.m.
