MILTON, Mass. --
Alex Kravchuk led the way with 28 points as the University of New England secured an 80-72 men's basketball victory against Curry College in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at Katz Gymnasium on Monday afternoon (Jan. 10).
The Nor'easters (2-10, 1-4 CCC) extended their 42-35 halftime cushion up to 13 (60-47) before the midway mark of the 2nd period. However, the Colonels (2-11, 1-5 CCC) bounced right back with 10 in-a-row -- including a couple treys from Angelo Sardegna. UNE posted the next eight, though, to make it 68-57 with 5:34 on the clock, but only to see Curry respond with seven unanswered (68-64).
Kravchuk canned a corner triple late in the ensuing shot clock to halt the hosts, but Sardenga equaled that on the next possession (71-67). A bucket by UNE's
Sam McElliott with 2:59 remaining essentially put things out of reach, as the hosts could not get any closer than five in the waning moments.
The Nor'easters received a double-double out of Kravchuk, who grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to guide his side to a 45-28 edge on the boards. Kravchuk hit 11-of-12 at the line, where the visitors out-scored Curry by 11 in the contest (19-8). Monday's scoring production moves him into 12th all-time in program history at 1,347 points; six shy of taking 11th.
Drake Gavin dialed up a career-best 16 points to aid the UNE attack.
Ric Castillo went for nine points and eight caroms, and
Anthony Senesombath scored nine, as well.
The home squad was paced by Sardenga's 21 points. JayQuan Leonard and Sante Smith registered 18 and 13 points, respectively.
The Nor'easters never trailed after consecutive three-pointers by
Michael Quinn and Gavin in the early going (18-13). Senesombath (5) and Gavin (4) powered a 12-2 spurt that extended the lead to 32-20 with 7:21 to play in the 1st, but the Colonels had it level at 32-all by the 3:25 mark. A hoop by Gavin and drawn charge by Senesombath stopped the swing and put UNE on top for good, before McElliott and Gavin made it 38-32 in short order. Gavin had 11 points at the midway break.
UNE is lined up to face Gordon College on Wednesday.
