WENHAM, Mass. -- Gordon College had its 13-point, 2nd-half advantage sliced to three in the waning seconds but managed to cling to a 76-72 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's basketball result against the University of New England on Wednesday night (Jan. 12) at the Bennett Center.
The Fighting Scots (5-6, 2-4 CCC) were up by eight at the midway break and increased the cushion to 59-46 at the 13:21 mark behind back-to-back treys from Garrett Sattazahn and Treyton Tebbs.
Alex Kravchuk answered with five in-a-row for the Nor'easters (2-11, 1-5), though, and eventually consecutive hoops by
Mark Rella trimmed it to 68-64 with 4:17 on the clock.
Zach Quanico countered immediately with a three-pointer (71-64) for the hosts, only to see scores by Rella and Kravchuk set the gap back at four (72-68) with 1:50 left. The rest was an exchange of free throws. Up five (74-69), Gordon left the door open by missing the front end of a 1-and-1 and Kravchuk cashed in on a pair to make it 74-71 with 20 seconds remaining. But the Scots did get the next two (:17), and after Kravchuk hit a one-shot technical, UNE came up empty trying to extend the contest.
Gordon's balanced offense was topped by 15 points from David Massillon, who also grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. Parker Omslaer contributed 12 points, 11 boards, and four blocks. Sattazahn posted 11 points and eight rebounds.
Kravchuk amassed a career-high 43 points, tying Johnnie Jefferson (2007-08) and Derek Vogel (1995-96) for the 3rd-highest single-game total in the combined history of UNE, Westbrook College, and St. Francis College -- behind only the 56-point performance by Drew Muniz three years ago, and a 45-point effort by Vogel in 1994-95. Kravchuk got there with 12-of-20 shooting from the floor, which included 5-for-9 from deep, and 14-of-15 accuracy at the charity stripe. He also snagged 10 rebounds and five steals.
Rella similarly registered a personal high with 14 points on 6-of-10 field goals, along with seven rebounds.
Drake Gavin supported with six points, 10 caroms, and five assists.
Gordon had a 52-39 edge on the glass and shot 45 percent in the match (28-for-62), but surrendered 19 points to the Nor'easters on its 16 turnovers. UNE, meanwhile, only made 32 percent of its attempts from the floor -- beyond Kravchuk and Rella, the remainder of the squad connected on just 5-of-42 tries.
The Nor'easters are slated to be back in Biddeford on Saturday (3 p.m.) entertaining Roger Williams University.
