UNE gets third straight win, 48-42 at Curry

Box Score

MILTON, Mass. -- The University of New England led for all but 2:26 of the initial period on the way to a 48-42 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's basketball victory over Curry College on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 14) at Katz Gymnasium.

With their third consecutive win, the Nor'easters (9-5) move to 6-2 in league action. UNE has captured the last 16 meetings with the Colonels, who drop to 5-10 and 3-5 in the CCC.

Sadie Nelson paced the visitors with 11 points, and Olivia Shaw tallied 10. Alicia Brown had nine points and eight rebounds, and Sam MacDonald recorded eight points and seven boards. Ashley Coneys grabbed a game-best 10 rebounds for UNE, which overcame 30 percent shooting (18-for-60), 22 turnovers, and 24 personal fouls.

For Curry, Nicole Rice notched a match-high 12 points and five blocks. Emily Irwin had 11 points, nine rebounds, and four steals. Molly Plunkett added nine points.

The hosts out-scored Big Blue by nine at the charity stripe, in spite of making just 16-of-29 freebies. The Nor'easters also limited the Colonels to 26.7 percent accuracy (12-for-45) from the floor and forced 23 turnovers, which resulted in 25 points going to the other direction.

UNE was up by as many as eight (19-11) during the opening 20 minutes, but only had a three-point cushion (21-18) at the midway break. The teams combined for 33 turnovers and 30 fouls prior to intermission.

The Nor'easters' advantage peaked at 11 (46-35) with 4:45 left in the 4th, only to have Curry answer with seven in-a-row. But that was all the Colonels could do, as they went scoreless in the last two minutes.

UNE will look to keep the positive play going on Tuesday (5 p.m.) at Eastern Nazarene College (5-3 CCC).
