BIDDEFORD, Maine – Johnson & Wales University scored twice in the first half and hung on for a 2-1 Conference of New England victory over the University of New England women's soccer team in Saturday afternoon's matchup at Blue Storm Stadium.
Lexy Brodeur's first career goal in the 66th minute looked to be the start of a comeback for the Nor'easters (4-1, 0-1), but UNE could not find the equalizer, ultimately taking the first loss of the season.
Mia Mangano put the Wildcats (2-3, 1-0) on the board in the eighth minute, and an own goal doubled JWU's lead in the 26th minute. UNE had a handful of opportunities in the waning minutes after Brodeur's goal, sending a few wide, and two being saved by JWU's Ava Vaughan – her only two of the contest.
Haley Coombs recorded three saves for the Nor'easters.
UNE had an 8-5 advantage in corners and an 11-9 edge in total shots, but trailed 4-3 in shots on goal.
Following the CNE opener, UNE will step away from conference action to host Bowdoin on Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m.
