BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England men's lacrosse team got off to a strong start and never trailed on its way to a 12-7 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in a Conference of New England clash Wednesday afternoon (Apr. 8) at Blue Bolt Field.

The triumph was the first conference positive result for the Nor'easters, who improved to 4-9 overall (1-3 CNE).

Five different players scored first-quarter goals for UNE as the hosts opened up a 5-2 advantage. Preston Briggs scored half of the Nor'easters' goal output in the second frame, helping UNE to maintain momentum and take a 9-4 cushion into intermission. A stout defensive effort by the Nor'easters all afternoon was especially key in the second half to fend off any comeback thoughts of Wentworth.

Briggs and Stephen Fogarty each tallied three goals to lead the offensive output. Shea Fogarty scored twice, while Kyle Dunn contributed a match-best six points (1 goal, 5 assists). Dunn's five-assist performance established a career best in that category. Declan Mulkerin, Brennan Chane and Chris Gottlieb all found the scoring column for UNE.

Gabe Cobham scored a game-high four goals for the Leopards. Brendan Kroll added a pair.

Ean LaRochelle played a pivotal role in the win, winning 11 of 18 faceoff opportunities, which led to him scooping up six ground balls. Gottlieb finished with a game-high seven ground balls, while Eben Fagonde had five to go with three caused turnovers. UNE racked up 14 caused turnovers on 33 Wentworth miscues. The Nor'easters played a very disciplined game and were whistled for just one penalty.

Rookie goalkeeper Eli Allaire earned the win with a 10-save performance. A.J. Smith registered nine stops for WIT (5-6, 1-4).

The Nor'easters will be looking for back-to-back conference wins Saturday when they face the University of Hartford at Blue Bolt Field. The opening draw is scheduled for 4 p.m.
