PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Johnson & Wales University amassed 26Â hits to take a Conference of New England (CNE) pair from the University of New England softball team, 14-1 (5 innings) and 13-5 (5 innings), on Tuesday (Apr. 21) at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.
The Wildcats (14-14, 7-7 CNE) scored a combined 17 times during one half inning in each contest to break things open. Hailey Cardiello tallied five hits on the day to pace the hosts, while Mady Lyons accounted for five runs batted in on three hits. Ashley Bergeron, Morgan Pelletier, and Jadyn Torres each had three hits and collectively supplied 11 RBI.
Hannah Irons registered two doubles and four hits for the Nor'easters (12-16, 6-8), who are back in Biddeford on Wednesday (3:30 p.m.) to entertain Bowdoin College.
Delaney Whitten had three hits overall, which included home runs in her first two at-bats of the nightcap.
Whitten gave UNE a 3-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning of
GAME 2, after a single by Irons and
Emma Michaud walk. While RBI from Torres (solo HR) and Cardiello helped shift JWU ahead by the end of the 2nd, 4-3, a leadoff single by
Adrianna Carsetti in the 3rd set Whitten up for another dinger to give the Nor'easters a 5-4 edge.
The two home runs were Whitten's first of the year, and the 11th time a UNE player has clocked multiple homers in the same game -- the only other time in the last 12 years was 2021.
Things flipped in the last half of the 3rd, as the Wildcats converted eight hits into eight runs.
Zofia Twarog joined Irons and Whitten with a pair of hits in the match.
Lizzie Brytowski took the setback in the UNE circle, opposite of JWU's Brianna Ghilardi.
Johnson & Wales started quickly in
GAME 1, after eluding any damage from double by Irons to kick off the afternoon. Lyons and Bergeron both doubled and Pelletier homered for a 4-0 cushion.
Another leadoff batted reached for the Nor'easters in the 2nd, until a lineout double-play squashed that chance. The big hits kept coming for the Wildcats, as a two-run double from Lyons, followed by a home run by Bergeron, and then a three-run shot from Gabby Bellamore powered a nine-run inning.
Each side had a solo home run in the 3rd --
Elise Connor for UNE, and Bellamore again for JWU.
Jill Reed worked all five frames for the hosts to pick up the win, going against UNE starter
Kara MacDonald.
