BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Bowdoin College scored the last three runs of the opener and final five of the nightcap to separate from the University of New England and secure a couple of positive decisions, 6-2 and 8-3, in softball action Wednesday (Apr. 22) at Nor'easter Diamond.
The Polar Bears improve to 25-6 after totaling 25 hits on the afternoon, which included five from Anika Ewert, who increased her Division III-leading batting average from .626 to .644 with plate appearances only in the second contest. Baylie Wong and Chloe Garcia registered four hits apiece over the doubleheader, and Margaret Flannery-Goodman added three -- two of which were triples.
UNE (12-18) received three singles from both
Emma Michaud and
Adrianna Carsetti during the twinbill, with two more from
Zofia Twarog.
Over the past nine days, the Nor'easters' three non-conference opponents from Maine have sported a combined .782 winning percentage at the conclusion of the meetings. UNE will stay at home to face Roger Williams University next in Conference of New England play on Saturday (12 p.m.).
In spite of Ewert going 5-for-5 at the dish,
GAME 2 (BOW 8-3) was a battle right to the finish. Trailing 1-0, the hosts worked around a leadoff error in the Bowdoin 2nd and stranded the bases loaded. After one of Flannery-Goodman's triples knocked in another unearned run in the 3rd, the Nor'easters escaped a bases-loaded, no-outs situation in the 4th -- keyed by a double-play that included a basket catch by Michaud at the back edge of the infield and the ensuing throw to
Emma Koenig at the plate to prevent a tagging runner from scoring.
Following a two-out RBI-double by Elise Siciliano to make it 3-0 in the 5th, UNE notched four hits in the bottom of the frame to rally and knot things up (3-3).
Elise Connor doubled and moved further on a sacrifice, before singles by Carsetti and Michaud. Twarog delivered an RBI-double into the right-center gap, and then Michaud dove around a tag to score on the tail end of a groundout.
In the 7th, however, five hits and three UNE miscues contributed to the Polar Bears netting five runs; Wong and Flannery-Goodman provided the go-ahead contact to make it 5-3. UNE drew three consecutive one-out walks in its last chance, but could not chip into the deficit.
A total of seven errors hampered the Nor'easters, leading to five unearned runs against starter
Kara MacDonald, who went 6.2 innings while striking out four and walking none. On the other side for Bowdoin, Kathleen Hester improved to 6-0 by striking out six against six hits and seven free passes.
Maddie Current held the UNE lineup in check, for the most part, during
GAME 1 (BOW 6-2), yielding a pair of unearned runs while fanning six to register her 10th win of the season for the Polar Bears.
Flannery-Goodman supplied a triple in the 1st to give the edge to the visitors, who then maintained it in the bottom of the inning by catching a runner attempting to steal home. Another two-out RBI came from Kaitlyn Fado in the 2nd.
The Nor'easters got one back in the 3rd, as a single into the right-center gap by Michaud was misplayed and allowed
Hannah Irons to scamper around from first base. In the 4th, Koenig reduced the gap to one, again (3-2), with an RBI-double to the wall in center field.
But a pair of singles, aggressive base running, and an error led to three scores for Bowdoin in the 5th. The Polar Bears were primed to add more in the 6th and 7th -- including after Garcia's third hit, putting two aboard with no outs -- but left five on base in those innings.
After three walks in as many at-bats, Irons smacked a gap double in the home half of the 7th, and Carsetti's second hit moved Irons to third with two away, only to see the game end on the next play.
Bridget Divoll took the setback in the circle for the Nor'easters, allowing five earned runs in 4.2 innings of work.
Lizzie Brytowski whiffed three the rest of the way, against three singles and two walks.
