BIDDEFORD, Maine --
Drake Turcotte and
Franco Leehive supplied wins at #1 and #3 singles to help the University of New England gain an edge on the way to a 5-2 Conference of New England (CNE) men's tennis victory over Curry College at Blue Cyclone Complex on Tuesday (Apr. 14).
The Nor'easters (4-6, 3-5 CNE) raced out to the initial doubles result, as Leehive and
Liam Miller breezed to a 6-0 win as the top pair. Turcotte and
Tyler Mason at #2 doubles, along with
Andrew Young and
Logan Flor at #3 doubles, had leads late in the set but needed tiebreakers to settle things. Turcotte and Mason never trailed after a 4-1 start, while Young and Flor were behind during changeovers at 1-2 and 5-6, but ultimately both tandems pulled out 7-2 triumphs in their respective breakers to secure the point for UNE.
Turcotte was first the finish line in the singles portion with a 6-1, 6-1 outcome in the top matchup. It was 2-1 overall when Leehive booked a 6-1, 6-2 decision at #3 singles, which was just as Miller was separating himself from Curry's Eric Flynn in the third set at #2 singles. Flynn had taken the opening frame, only to see Miller storm back and claim the match for UNE's deciding point (2-6, 6-0, 6-2).
Finnegan Whelden then put the finishing touches on a hard-fought 6-3, 7-5 result in favor of the Nor'easters at #6 singles. With the overall contest in hand, once Flor battled back to notch the second set in a tiebreak, he and Curry's Maitreya Abend played a super tiebreaker for the third set, which Abend captured to wrap up the day.
UNE will turn right around and head to Colby-Sawyer College for a league date on Wednesday.
