GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine constructed three innings that accounted for 11 runs to take both sides of a softball doubleheader against the University of New England, 8-2 and 5-1, on Monday (Apr. 13) at USM Stadium.
Aislin Davis and Avery Moore combined for 11 hits and seven runs scored to help power the Huskies (15-8) on offense, while Mackenzie Kingsbury and Mia Coots limited the opponents from the circle.
Delaney Whitten had three hits over the two games for the Nor'easters (12-11), who are back at home on Tuesday (3 p.m.) to face No.20 Husson University.
A total of 20 runners were stranded on base between the teams inÂ
GAME 1 (USM 8-2). UNE was able to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the 3rd inning after a single and steal by
Hannah Irons, and a one-out RBI-single from
Lizzie Brytowski. But the Nor'easters left the bases full in both the 3rd and 4th, missing chances to extend the gap.
Southern Maine started 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position through four innings against UNE's
Mo Kinsella, but began to find its footing in the 5th. While the bases were also left loaded, four singles and an error yielded three runs, including the first of four RBI from Kristina Yebba.
The visitors left a couple more on base with one out in the 6th, and then the Huskies broke things open with five hits aided by another error. Yebba delivered a bases-clearing double to make it 7-1.
Irons, Whitten, and
Kyleigh Matola each had two hits for the Nor'easters. Davis and Moore notched three apiece for the hosts, while Ella Bezanson had two hits and two runs scored. Kingsbury fanned five in 5.1 innings before Coots collected the save.
Davis and Moore both singled to open up
GAME 2 (USM 5-1), and Mackenzie Renner turned in a one-run double for an early edge. Emily Wheeler, who notched six total bases on three hits overall, doubled and scored in the 2nd to make it 2-0. Coots retired the first 11 she faced in the nightcap, and then an RBI-single by Moore, plus a two-run single from Olivia Levasseur, padded the cushion in the last half of the 4th.
A leadoff double by
Marissa Durette in the 7th eventually came around to get UNE on the board.
Coots wound up with eight strikeouts against no walks and three hits in a complete-game effort for Southern Maine.
Bridget Divoll took the setback for the Nor'easters.
