SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Western New England University found its footing late in the third quarter, scoring seven of the game's last nine goals, to overcome a 6-3 deficit and come away with a 10-8 Conference of New England victory over the University of New England men's lacrosse team on Saturday at Golden Bear Stadium.
Shea Fogarty's game-high five goals were not enough for the Nor'easters (3-7, 0-2), who saw their first deficit since the opening quarter in the midst of WNEU's 5-0 fourth-quarter run. Each of those five goals came in a span of less than three minutes.
Fogarty's career goals total now sits in the triple digits (103), making him the seventh player in program history with 100 or more. The senior, who also recorded an assist in Saturday's game, surpassed 150 career points – he is also the seventh player in such company within the program's record book.
The Golden Bears' (5-5, 2-0) balanced scoring featured hat tricks from both Logan Proctor and Logan Jenkins. Jacob Roy registered five assists, in addition to two goals, to rack up a game-high seven points. Jeffrey Wojtowicz faced just 12 shots on goal while handling goalkeeping duties for WNEU, while
Eli Allaire amassed 14 stops for the Nor'easters, along with one in the final minutes by
Christian Berluti.
Chris Catuosco's clean faceoff wins led him to a game-high 18 ground balls, and a 45-31 advantage for the Golden Bears in that column. David Noel contributed a game-best five caused turnovers for the hosts.
Three straight third-quarter goals by the Nor'easters turned a 3-3 tie into a 6-3 lead, but UNE mustered just two goals after that run. Proctor, who led the charge in WNEU's comeback, scored each of this three goals in the final 18 minutes of the game.
The Nor'easters are set to host a Conference of New England opponent for the first time this season on Tuesday, March 31 when they square off with Endicott at 7 p.m.
