DUDLEY, Mass. – Shea Ullo's four goals helped Nichols College pick up a 10-8 victory over the University of New England men's lacrosse team on Wednesday night – the first Conference of New England game of the season for both sides – at Vendetti Field.
Nichols (5-4, 1-0) led wire to wire, with Ullo scoring the game's first goal just over two minutes after the opening faceoff, but spent most of the first half clinging to a one-goal lead. Two Bison tallies in the final four minutes of the second quarter, plus an early third-quarter goal, allowed Nichols to build a 7-3 advantage that proved insurmountable with goals at a premium.
The Nor'easters (3-6, 0-1), who were stymied by Carter Renaud's 15 saves, were unable to string together consecutive goals at any point until the final six minutes of the game, when they netted three unanswered, including one by Nate Hunt with just four seconds left. That 3-0 run came with UNE already facing a 10-5 deficit.
Shea Fogarty and Preston Briggs accounted for all but two of the Nor'easters' goals, having put up three apiece. UNE cashed in two of its five extra-man opportunities – one from Briggs and another from Finn McCoy in the third quarter that quelled Nichols' momentum after the Bison went up 7-4. Nichols was 1-for-3 when playing with a man-advantage.
Hunt, in addition to his first goal of the season, recorded a game-high four caused turnovers and three ground balls. Nichols' Travis Arnold, who went 11-for-18 in faceoffs, led both sides with five ground balls.
The Nor'easters are on the road again Saturday, March 28, visiting Western New England University at 4 p.m.
