CLERMONT, Fla. --
Kara MacDonald and the University of New England softball team recorded the first Nor'easter shutout in 62 games by defeating SUNY Morrisville, 5-0, at The Spring Games on Thursday (Mar. 19).
MacDonald went the distance in the circle to hold the Mustangs off of the scoreboard, fanning five while allowing three hits, no walks, and one hit-by-pitch. It was the first time UNE had kept an opponent from touching home plate since April 15, 2024.
The Nor'easters (3-4) jumped out to a 4-0 cushion in the bottom of the 1st inning, combining one single, three free passes, one hit batter, and an error into three runs before a lineout double-play. Another walk kept things going, and
Delaney Whitten stole home. The lone single was from
Emma Michaud, extending her season-long hitting streak.
Adrianna Carsetti and
Fiona Casey each claimed an RBI during the frame.
Two batters reached base with two outs in the Morrisville 3rd, but a groundout ended the threat.
Carsetti led off the last half of that stanza with a single, stole second, and scored on a two-out error to set the margin at a handful.
MacDonald cruised through the next 10 batters until a one-out single in the 7th. But then a grounder to shortstop
Hannah Irons up the middle led to a game-ending double-play with
Fiona Casey.
Callie Lafontaine accounted for two of the three hits for the Mustangs.
