WEYMOUTH, Mass. -- With the contest level at 2-2, the University of Massachusetts-Boston secured the three remaining singles matches to secure a 5-2 decision against the University of New England in men's tennis action Tuesday (Mar. 10) at the Weymouth Racket Club.
The initial point of the afternoon narrowly went to the Beacons (4-2), who took #3 doubles before
Drake Turcotte and
Tyler Mason won at #2 doubles by a 6-3 score to tie the session for the Nor'easters (0-2). The closest match of the three was at #1, where UMass Boston's William Kybinec and Thomas Ameral slipped past
Liam Miller and
Franco Leehive, 7-5.
Turcotte made quick work of UMB's Dominik Dwyer at #1 singles to register UNE's first full point of the year (6-3, 6-1), and, when Leehive booked another win at #3 singles (6-4, 6-3), the overall score was knotted at 2-all.
Kubinec closed out Miller at #2 in a second-set tiebreak (6-4, 7-6 [7-3]) to nudge the Beacons back in front, though, and then Joseph Malone outlasted
Finnegan Whelden in three sets at #5 singles (6-3, 3-6, 6-2) to clinch the result for the hosts.
The Nor'easters are slated to entertain Bridgewater State University on Monday (3:30 p.m.) at Blue Cyclone Complex.
