Statistics

BIDDEFORD, Maine – Preston Briggs and Hogan Corona combined for seven goals, helping the University of New England men's lacrosse team get back in the win column with a convincing 12-4 triumph over Maine Maritime Academy on Tuesday evening at Blue Bolt Field.

Tuesday's game lifted UNE's Charlie Burch to the century mark in career victories at the collegiate level, with each of those 100 coming at the Nor'easters' helm.

Briggs led all scorers with four goals, including three in the second half, where UNE (2-3) outscored the Mariners (2-2), 8-2, to cruise comfortably to the non-conference win. Corona's three goals were followed by two from both Shea Fogarty and Brennan Chane. Fogarty racked up a game-high five points, having also earned three assists, in addition to his team-best seven ground balls.

Tobey Lappin scored two goals as the only Mariner with multiple tallies. Bryce Crowell dominated possession, going 19-for-20 in faceoffs, where he was unbeaten until the fourth quarter. Crowell racked up a game-high 13 ground balls, with many of those faceoff victories coming cleanly.

Eli Allaire made 14 saves to earn his second win of the season. MMA's Ben Kieu was busier on the opposite side, totaling 16 saves in the loss.

The score was even, 2-2, early in the second quarter before the Nor'easters poured in six straight starting with Stephen Fogarty's goal at the 11:27 mark of the second. Chane added another with 5:03 left in the half, handing UNE its largest lead up to that point. Two early third-quarter goals – one from Briggs and another from Corona – expanded the lead in the first five minutes of the third quarter, before the duo traded goals once again late in the third, hiking the Nor'easters' advantage to 8-2. The Mariners were without a goal in the third quarter, but found the back of the net at the 13:39 mark of the fourth – their first tally since the opening minute of the second quarter.

Both sides were able to cash in one man-up opportunity, with UNE getting three chances and MMA receiving five. The Mariners were just 10-for-18 clearing, including 1-for-4 in the scoreless third quarter. UNE was 18-for-21 on the day.

The Nor'easters will visit Plymouth State on Thursday, March 12 at 4 p.m. for a non-conference tilt that was originally scheduled for Sunday, March 1 in Biddeford.
