PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State led wire to wire in a 9-5 non-conference win over the University of New England men's lacrosse team on Thursday evening at Panther Field.
The Nor'easters (2-4) were within one goal, 5-4, at the 9:31 mark of the third, but four straight from the Panthers (2-2) handed PSU its largest lead of the day (9-4) with under three minutes remaining in the fourth. In a primarily defensive battle, neither side found the back of the net until the final seconds of the first quarter. That was the first of three straight Panther goals to open the game.
First-year goalie
Eli Allaire, recently named to the USILA Division III Team of the Week, recorded 11 saves for the Nor'easters. Ethan Schena made 10 for PSU and held the Nor'easters without a goal from the 9:31 mark of the third until the final two minutes of the game.
Colby Walden racked up a game-high five points for the Panthers, finishing with two goals and three assists. Brady Hunt led all scorers with three goals.
Preston Briggs put up two for UNE, with
Shea Fogarty,
Stephen Fogarty and
Finn McCoy rounding out the visitors' scoring.
UNE was scoreless on its four extra-man opportunities, while the Panthers cashed in one of three chances – the third goal in the crucial stretch of four straight in the second half.
Ryan McInnis helped control possession for PSU, going 9-for-13 in faceoffs, while Cameron Leeds scooped up a game-high seven ground balls.
UNE's quick turnaround will bring Husson to Blue Bolt Field on Friday, March 13 at 2 p.m. for a game that was originally scheduled for Saturday.
