BIDDEFORD, Maine – University of Massachusetts-Boston overcame an early deficit to chalk up a 15-11 victory over the University of New England in Friday evening's non-conference men's lacrosse action on Blue Bolt Field.
UNE (1-1) rolled to a 4-1 lead in the first six minutes of the game – thanks in part to two early goals from
Stephen Fogarty – but the Beacons (1-0) went on to lead, 11-7, at halftime. The Nor'easters were unable to come any closer than four goals during the second half, despite scoring four the game's last six.
Jack Schartner paced UMass Boston with four goals and one assist, while Matt Hutchings and Nolan Beauregard scored three apiece. Cole Allan put together a four-point effort, with two goals and two helpers. UNE's
Shea Fogarty led both sides with six points, having scored twice, in addition to four assists.
Stephen Fogarty was the team's leading goal-scorer with three, including the early tallies that had the Beacons on their heels in the opening minutes.
UMass Boston's Holden Kuzniar collected a game-high six ground balls, along with four caused turnovers, tying UNE's
Chris Gottlieb for the game high in that column. The Beacons earned a slim 31-29 advantage in ground balls.
Christian Berluti and
Eli Allaire handled goalkeeping duties for UNE in the first half and second half, respectively. Both made seven saves, but first-year Allaire did so while allowing just four second-half goals. James Boldy recorded 10 saves in the win on the other side.
A 5-0 first-quarter run by the Beacons spelled trouble for the Nor'easters, who saw their 4-1 lead quickly turn into a 6-4 deficit. UMass Boston scored the last two goals of the second quarter, including a buzzer-beater by Matt Laverty, and netted the first two goals of the third to build a 13-7 lead. Early fourth-quarter tallies from Beauregard and Hutchings provided more than enough insurance.
UNE's early-season homestand continues with Wheaton visiting Blue Bolt Field on Wednesday, March 4 at 4 p.m.
