BIDDEFORD, Maine -- An aggressive University of Hartford defense held the University of New England to 30 percent shooting, as the Hawks earned an important 60-45 Conference of New England road win a women's basketball regular-season finale Saturday afternoon (Feb. 21) at Coach Beaudry's Court inside the Harold Alfond Forum.

The victory secured the No. 4 spot and a first-round home playoff game for the Hawks, who conclude the regular season with an overall record of 14-11, 11-5 in conference play. UNE fell to .500 overall (12-12) and finished with a CNE ledger identical to Hartford (11-5) in dropping to the fifth seed. The Hawks earned the higher seed and the right to host by virtue of its win over top-seeded Johnson & Wales University earlier in the season as the CNE tie-breaking procedures came into play.

Allie Shenloogian came off the bench to toss in 17 points and lead the way for the visitors. The rookie guard was 6-for-9 from the floor and grabbed seven rebounds before fouling out. Lauren Sabia chipped in 15 points and seven caroms.

Paige Meda was the lone UNE player to hit double digits, scoring 10 points in just 17 minutes of reserve time. Jaylyn Bartolome tossed in nine points, making all four of her field goal attempts. Maddy Werner also scored nine to go with six rebounds and a career-best five blocked shots. Gabby Soter posted team highs of seven rebounds and six steals.

Each offense struggled to find a rhythm in the first quarter, with Hartford leading by a slim 7-5 margin after the opening 10 minutes. Bartolome scored all of UNE's points in the frame.

Shooting improved in the second quarter as each team was north of 40 percent from the floor. The Hawks led 20-19 at the break.

The third stanza proved to be pivotal in the outcome of the contest as Hartford doubled-up (24-12) in the scoring column to create separation. The Hawks converted 10 of 16 field goal attempts (62.5 percent) in building a 44-31 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.

Hartford was in front by 19 (50-31) with 6:14 on the clock, and the Nor'easters were unable to get any closer than 13 the rest of the way.

The Hawks shot 40.4 percent (21 of 52) on the afternoon and controlled the backboard to a tune of 40-28. They also went to the free throw line 21 times, compared to 12 for UNE.

The 2026 CNE Tournament is scheduled to get underway Tuesday with a pair of first-round tilts. In addition to the Hartford/UNE opener, No. 3 Western New England University (18-7, 12-4) will host No. 6 Roger Williams University (13-12, 9-7). Johnson & Wales claimed the regular-season title with a 15-1 conference mark (21-4 overall) and earned a bye, as did defending champion No. 2 Endicott College (17-8, 13-3).

UNE and Hartford split its two regular-season meetings, with the Nor'easters rallying from a fourth-quarter deficit to take a 60-50 road victory on Feb. 7.

Prior to the contest, the Nor'easters recognized the senior class of Grace Boucher, Bartolome and Soter.
