BIDDEFORD, Maine – The University of New England men's lacrosse team scored three unanswered goals to finish off an 11-9 victory over Saint Joseph's College of Maine in Wednesday's season-opening nail-biter at Blue Bolt Field.

Stephen Fogarty tied the game, 9-9, early in the fourth quarter before Hogan Corona netted the go-ahead goal with 6:29 remaining. Preston Briggs added an insurance tally with a minute and change left, while Nor'easters and first-year goalkeeper Eli Allaire held the Monks scoreless for the game's final 10:52. Allaire finished the evening with 14 saves.

Kyle Dunn registered a game-high five points, all of which were assists. Shea Fogarty and Briggs scored three goals apiece, as did SJC's Brandon Cavicchi. Corona and Stephen Fogarty both scored twice, and Ean LaRochelle rounded out the Nor'easters' scorers.

Allaire made four saves in the game's last nine minutes to hold off the Monks, whose 6-3 second-quarter lead was the game's largest by either side. After facing that deficit, UNE rattled five straight goals between the end of the second quarter and the beginning of the third, but that was answered by a 3-0 SJC run – capped off by Cavicchi's go-ahead score with just under 11 minutes remaining.

Reed Wescott and Jake Dernier split goalkeeping duties for the Monks, and that duo combined for five saves.

SJC came up empty on each of its six man-up opportunities, and UNE was 1-for-5 on the extra-man advantage thanks to Briggs' closing tally. The Nor'easters, possessing the ball in the game's final minutes, took advantage of SJC's 1-minute penalty, with Briggs burying the dagger off an assist from Sea Fogarty.

The Nor'easters' season-opening homestand continues Saturday, Feb. 21 with Maine Maritime visiting Blue Bolt Field at 1 p.m.
