Gulls fend off Nor'easters in straight sets

Statistics

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Endicott College overcame a late five-point deficit in the opening frame and proceeded to secure a 3-0 Conference of New England women's volleyball result (25-23, 25-15, 25-17) versus the University of New England on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 10) at Coach Beaudry's Court inside the Harold Alfond Forum.

In a 1st set with 13 ties and eight lead-changes, a kill and ace by Kendall Gallaugher sparked five unanswered by the Nor'easters to take a 20-15 edge. The Gulls (12-4, 4-1 CNE) responded with four in-a-row, only to see the next three points won by UNE (23-19). However, Hadley Helenbrook notched three kills in a string of five for Endicott, and a hitting miscue by the hosts sealed the session for the visitors.

EC led wire-to-wire in the 2nd and 3rd, though UNE had things close at 18-16 late in the last set.

Helenbrook and Ava Grace Dresback (.375 hitting) accounted for 12 kills apiece on the side of the Gulls. Jacquelyn Marion added 10 kills, largely with the help of 33 assists out of Hannah Mcguire. Emma Gulaskey and Dresback had 13 and 10 digs, respectively.

Tess Madden topped the Nor'easters (6-6, 2-2) with seven kills, and recorded seven digs. Hannah Nowell hit five winners, and while Gallaugher, Josie Eliot (solo block), and Abby Simao each contributed kills, on some of the 14 assists by Michaela Muldoon. Muldoon and Lylah Shumway both posted 10 digs.

With the cancelation the upcoming midweek game, UNE will be back in action next Saturday at the University of Hartford.
