Hawks outlast Nor'easters in five sets

Statistics

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. -- The University of Hartford received 11 kills from five different players in the 5th set to snag a 3-2 Conference of New England result (25-15, 22-25, 25-23, 22-25, 15-10) versus the University of New England women's volleyball squad at Chase Arena on Saturday (Oct. 17).

The Hawks hit .389 in the deciding frame and used a 9-1 run in the middle to separate (11-5) from the Nor'easters and pick up the key league victory.

Rylee Miller had 15 kills and 12 digs to pace Hartford (11-8, 3-3 CNE), while Calla McCombs totaled 12 kills and 16 digs. Jordan Murphy posted 12 points with eight winners and a hand in seven of the team's eight blocks. Amara Rhodes also collected a double-double of 38 assists and 12 digs.

For UNE (6-7, 2-3), Hannah Nowell topped the group with 14.5 points, behind six kills, three aces, and nine blocks (2 solo). Abby Simao registered a team-best 11 kills, and Kendall Gallaugher added eight more. Josie Eliot had seven kills and factored in eight of the team's 16 blocks.

Tess Madden scooped up a match-high 17 digs, to go with seven kills. Abby Zamora notched a double-double of 17 assists and 12 digs, and 20 addition assists came from Hayley Shult to guide the attack.

The Hawks tallied the first four points of the match on the way to claiming the opening session, and led 17-10 in the 2nd before the Nor'easters began to battle back. It was still 21-17 when two of Nowell's service winners and a solo rejection by Eliot helped spark an 8-1 spurt to level the contest.

UNE built a 21-14 cushion in the 3rd, only to see the hosts close with an 11-2 stretch -- more than half of those points were miscues by the visitors. The 4th set came down to the wire, knotted at 20-all, until the Nor'easters spun a Hartford service error into a 5-2 finishing push to force a 5th stanza.

On Wednesday, UNE heads for Curry College.
