BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England limited Suffolk University to just five points in the third quarter to open up a close contest on its way to a 62-50 Conference of New England women's basketball win Tuesday evening (Jan. 6) at Coach Beaudry's Court inside the Harold Alfond Forum.
The Nor'easters, now 3-1 in conference play (5-8 overall), fought off a sluggish start by scoring 19 points in the second frame to take a slim 29-27 halftime margin.
Grace Boucher hit a trey inside the final minute and a jumper that beat the halftime buzzer to give the hosts momentum heading into the break.
UNE's defense held Suffolk to just 11 field goal attempts, including just two makes, in the third stanza to build a 12-point lead (44-32) by the end of the frame. The Rams were unable to get any closer than eight points the rest of the way.
Kaia Anderson continued her strong play, recording a 12-point, 12-rebound double-double to help lead the Nor'easters. Anderson's 12 caroms is a career best for the sophomore. Boucher finished with 11 points, which included a 3-for-4 effort from beyond the arc.
Gabby Soter scored seven points to go with three assists, three steals and two blocked shots.
Emily Picher scored seven points off the bench.
Allison Bono and Jordan Moreau combined to score 23 points for Suffolk (8-5, 2-2), which convereted nearly half of its field goal attempts (13 of 27) in the first half before connecting on 7 of 26 attempts (26.9 percent) over the final 20 minutes.
The Nor'easters received a spark from their bench in the first half as the reserves accounted for 18 of UNE's 29 points.
UNE will look for its third consecutive CNE victory on Saturday when the Nor'easters head to Springfield, Mass. to take on Western New England University.
