BIDDEFORD, Maine – Down by one score with under four minutes remaining, Roger Williams University put together a quick 8-0 run to grab the lead and eventually close out a tightly-contested 84-79 Conference of New England men's basketball victory over the University of New England on Saturday afternoon inside the Harold Alfond Forum.
The Hawks (11-9, 7-4) reclaimed the lead with Finn Miller's three-point play with 3:45 to go, then came back-to-back RWU buckets, including a triple from Ryan Higgins that proved to be the dagger with under three minutes remaining, handing the Hawks a 79-73 advantage.
Adam Lux hit a much-needed trey with only seconds remaining, bringing the Nor'easters (9-10, 5-5) back within one possession (82-79), but Philip Sughrue was 2-for-2 at the line to close the game.
Lux was 5-for-6 from the field, including 2-for-3 from deep, along with 8-for-10 from the line to finish with a game-high 20 points. Miller was a close second with 19 for the Hawks.
Adrian Torres and
Jayden Thornton scored 13 apiece for UNE, which featured four scorers in double figures.
Jaelen Jackson (10) rounded out that quartet.
Despite going 1-for-12 from deep in the first half, RWU still shot better than 50 percent from the floor on its way to a 40-35 halftime lead. The Nor'easters shot exactly 50 percent in the second half, knocking down seven 3-pointers (7-for-17), and even put together an early second-half 9-0 run to grab a five-point lead with just under 14 minutes remaining.
RWU narrowly claimed the advantage on the glass, 36-35, and UNE had a slight upper-hand in the turnover margin, 16-15. The Nor'easters came up with eight more second-chance points and put up five more points off of turnovers.
The Hawks' efficiency from inside the arc was the difference maker, with RWU shooting better than 50 percent on the day (32-60), despite going 4-for-18 from deep. The visitors amassed 56 points in the paint, while UNE recorded 30.
The Nor'easters hit the road for two straight, beginning with a visit to Gordon on Tuesday, Feb. 3 at 7:30 p.m.
