WENHAM, Mass. – The University of New England men's basketball team overcame an early deficit, and despite trailing for much of the second half, took over late to come away with a 93-91 triumph in Tuesday night's high-scoring Conference of New England battle against Gordon College inside the Bennett Center.
The Nor'easters (10-10, 6-5) faced an 83-79 deficit with six minutes and change remaining before embarking on an 11-0 run – capped off by a triple from
Adam Lux with under four minutes left – to grab their largest lead of the game, 90-83. Gordon (6-14, 5-6) was able to cut that lead to two, but UNE closed out the victory at the free throw line while a trio of much-needed 3-point attempts from the Fighting Scots each missed the mark.
Gordon led by 13 less than eight minutes into the game before UNE made its first large run of the night, 22-2, to roll to a 37-30 lead with under five minutes remaining in the first half. That momentum was largely quelled by halftime as the Nor'easters entered the break clinging to a 47-46 lead.
Jayden Thornton, now with double figures in the scoring column through 13 straight games, led UNE with 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting, including a 4-for-6 showing from deep.
Adrian Torres and
Gabe Galarraga followed with 18 and 17, respectively, and Lux was the fourth in double figures with 14. Gordon's loss came despite a game-high 24 points from Ryan Brooks and 22 from Alex Daniel, as well as a 36-30 rebounding advantage. The Fighting Scots committed four more turnovers (14), and even having shot better than 50 percent from the floor, were slightly outdone by the Nor'easters in that category as well.
The Nor'easters were 20-for-36 from the floor in the first half and finished 37-for-68. Gordon was 37-for-69 and narrowly had the upperhand from deep, drilling eight of 22 attempts, while UNE hit seven its 23.
With Tuesday's win, as well as UNE's home win over the Scots exactly two months prior, 2025-26 marks the first season in program history in which the Nor'easters achieved a two-game regular-season sweep over Gordon.
Another road test awaits the Nor'easters on Saturday, Feb. 7 when they travel to Hartford. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
