BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of England held Curry College scoreless over the initial 3:31 of the fourth quarter to pull away for a 71-57 Conference of New England women's basketball win Wednesday evening (Jan. 28) at Coach Beaudry's Court inside the Harold Alfond Forum.

Despite trailing for a major portion of the first half, UNE closed the session strong to take a slim 30-29 advantage into the break. The Nor'easters fell behind by as many as eight (25-17) in the second quarter before outscoring Curry 13-4 over the final 6:42 of the frame. Hannah Cook and Grace Boucher each dialed up treys to help key the surge. Sydney Jenisch dropped in 10 points in the half to lead the way for UNE.

Coming out of the locker room, Maddy Werner help the hosts ride their momentum, scoring a key 11 points in the third to aid in the Nor'easters building a 52-47 lead heading into the final stanza. Werner tallied 10 points in a span of 2:26 to turn a tie game into a 47-41 UNE advantage, a lead the hosts would never relinquish.

Curry remained within striking distance in the final frame until a Gabby Soter layup gave UNE a 67-54 margin with 2:31 on the clock. The Nor'easters scored their final four points from the foul line.

Werner finished with a game-high 15 points to pace a balanced UNE scoring output. The reigning CNE Rookie of the Year added five rebounds, three steals and pair of blocked shots. Jenisch pitched in with 14 points, while Soter had 12 and Boucher added 10 on a 4-for-7 effort from the floor, which included a pair of treys. Soter totaled three of the Nor'easters' 14 steals as UNE's defense forced 24 Curry miscues. Kaia Anderson led all players with seven boards.

Samantha Conti played a strong game for the Colonels (2-16, 1-9 CNE), recording 11 points, five assists and five steals. Sophie Hilbrunner contributed 11 points and Kasey Reeves 10. Curry shot an impressive 51.1 percent (24 of 47) from the field in the loss.

UNE was solid with the basketball, committing just 12 turnovers while converting Curry's 24 into 33 points.

The win kept the Nor'easters as one of four CNE squads with just two conference losses, behind leader Johnson & Wales University (9-1 CNE). Now 7-2 in league play and 9-9 overall, UNE hosts rival Roger Williams University on Saturday in a key conference showdown. Tip time at Coach Beaudry's Court is slated for 1 p.m.
