PROVIDENCE, R.I. –
Jayden Thornton's season-high 27 points were key the University of New England men's basketball team's 79-68 road win over Johnson & Wales University in Saturday afternoon's Conference of New England matchup inside the Wildcat Center.
Â
Thornton led all scorers, and the Nor'easters (7-8, 3-3) received additional offensive boosts from
Adam Lux and
Adrian Torres, who put up 16 and 15, respectively. JWU (1-15, 0-7) was led by Omar Grullon, who finished with 23. Dylan Hooter racked up a game-high 12 rebounds, along with 10 points, to record the game's only double-double.
Â
UNE only hit five 3-pointers on the day (5-for-19), but one of those came on the opening possession, setting the tone for an afternoon that would not see the Nor'easters trail at any point. The visitors had their first double-digit lead midway through the first half, and although that was trimmed to five, UNE took a 39-30 lead into halftime.
Â
In the second half with UNE leading 45-38, the Nor'easters needed just over two minutes to put together a 7-0 run – capped off by one of Thornton's three treys – to match its largest lead of the game, 52-38.
Â
Thornton finished the game 10-for-19 from the floor. Lux's 15 came in an efficient fashion, with the senior going 6-for-9 from the field. The Nor'easters shot nearly 50 percent on the day (30-for-62), while JWU narrowly cleared 40 percent (25-for-61). Â UNE had the upperhand on the glass, 42-36, though JWU came up with 10 offensive rebounds. Turnovers were even at 16-16.
Â
The Nor'easters look to build on Saturday's momentum at home on Tuesday, Jan. 20, when they host Wentworth at 7:30 p.m. UNE will wear Westbrook College Wildcats throwback uniforms during the game, celebrating the program's historical roots.
