Statistics

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Haley Coombs made eight of her career-best 12 saves in the 2nd half as the University of New England escaped with a 2-1 victory over the University of Southern Maine in women's soccer action Saturday afternoon (Sep. 6) at Barbara J. Hazard Field.

Kylie Curtin doubled the UNE advantage in the 48th minute, stealing the ball from the last defender and slotting her third tally of the year around the USM goalie [Watch]. However, the field tilted quite a bit in favor of the Huskies (2-1) the rest of the way, as shot attempts were 17-5 and corner kicks were 6-2 for the remainder of the contest.

Meghan Pryzbilla got one back for the visitors in the 59th minute, and Riley Reitchel pinged the crossbar in the 68th on a look from the top of the box. Then, the pressure really built over the final 17 minutes, but Coombs was up the the task with five stops in the closing stretch to maintain the edge on the scoreboard [Watch 74th / Watch 78th / Watch 90th].

The Nor'easters (3-1) opened the scoring with just under seven minutes left in the opening frame. Possession on the back half of the field settled to Jill Hodgson for a first-touch, left-footed service over the top of everyone to send Ashley Clark in on cage by herself and deposit her second goal of the season into the lower left corner [Watch]. Marah Walton also assisted on the play.

On the opposite side from Coombs was Halle Brown, who had five saves on the day for USM. One in the 83rd minute was an impressive denial on counter attack breakaway to keep the Huskies alive in the waning moments.

UNE will look to make it three-in-a-row on Wednesday during a visit to Lasell University.
