WESTFIELD, Mass. – The University of New England women's soccer team scored in the third minute of Wednesday's non-conference match at Westfield State, and that was enough for the Nor'easters to claim a 1-0 victory over the Owls on Alumni Field.
Haley Coombs recorded a career-high 10 saves en route to her second shutout of the season, while first-year
Gillian McGee's first career goal that came just over two minutes into the opening half served as the game winner.
McGee's goal, just the second shot for either side, came after Westfield State goalie Julia Robak turned away an initial
Brooke Pierotti attempt. Robak went on to stop each of the next eight shots sent her way to keep the Nor'easters (2-1) in check.
Westfield State (0-2-1) saw two of its three corner kicks come in the game's final 11 minutes, and was only able to direct a shot on goal following the latter chance, resulting in Coombs' final save of the evening. UNE received back-to-back corners, beginning in the 59th minute, but was unable to pad its lead during the second half.
The Nor'easters have won three straight in the series history with the Owls, dating back to the 2021 season, along with a six-game unbeaten streak that goes back to 2014.
UNE looks to pick up its first home win of the season when Southern Maine visits Hazard Field on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 2 p.m.
