Nor'easters, Hawks play to 1-1 tie

BRISTOL, R.I. -- The University of New England and Roger Williams University each tallied first-half goals in the opening 20 minutes, and that was it for scoring as the two squads played to a 1-1 draw Saturday afternoon (Sept. 27) in Conference of New England women's soccer action at Bayside Field.

It was the Nor'easters getting on the scoreboard first when Brooke Pierotti sent in a cross from the right corner that deflected off a Hawk defender into the net. The own-goal came in the 12th minute.

UNE's advantage would be short-lived, however, as Roger Williams leveled the score less than seven minutes later. Julia Robbins set-up Mya D'Antonio, who deposited a low shot into the right side of the goal for her team-leading fifth tally of the season.

Neither team was able to convert the remainder of the first half, as well as in the second frame. The Hawks (5-3-1, 2-0-1 CNE) out-shot the visitors by a 9-4 margin in each half and had a decent opportunity in the final minute, but UNE goalkeeper Haley Coombs stopped a bid by Robbins.

Coombs finished with nine saves for the Nor'easters, while Coco Marrelli had four for Roger Williams.

UNE (6-2-2, 2-0-1) returns to action Wednesday (Oct. 1) with a non-conference road match at Salve Regina University. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m.
