NEWPORT, R.I. – The University of New England women's soccer team scored early and tacked on two more in the second half on its way to a 3-0 road victory over Salve Regina in Wednesday evening's nonconference match on Toppa Field.
Brooke Pierotti opened the scoring in the 21st minute before
Amy Hatfield doubled the lead in the 51st, and
Gillian McGee provided further insurance in the 64th.
Haley Coombs made five saves in just under 70 minutes before
Anna Flaherty entered the game and stopped one shot to make the Seahawks (3-5-1) the fourth different opponent shutout by the Nor'easters (7-2-2) this season.
UNE held an 11-6 advantage in shots on goal, along with a 17-8 edge in total shots. Corner kicks also favored the Nor'easters, 5-3.
Salve Regina's starting goalkeeper Emelia DaPonte recorded three saves over the game's first 18 minutes before Pierotti found the back of the net with an assist from
Jill Hodgson. Hatfield's goal – assisted by
Marah Walton – was the first shot for either side in the second half. Those tallies were the first of the season for both Pierotti and Hatfield, and McGee found her third of the campaign less than 13 minutes after Hatfield's.
UNE, unbeaten in eight of its late nine games, looks to continue its momentum with another nonconference test as Thomas visits Hazard Field at noon on Saturday, Oct. 4.
