BIDDEFORD, Maine – The University of New England women's soccer team spent nearly 50 minutes with a 2-1 lead in Tuesday night's nonconference matchup with Bates on Hazard Field, but was ultimately forced to walk away with a 2-2 tie after the Bobcats netted the equalizer in the 85th minute.
Jill Hodgson's corner kick found the back of the net in the 17th minute to hand the Nor'easters (6-2-1) an early advantage
(Watch). Bates (3-1-2) answered in the 30th minute, when Ruby Hill scored off of Gwyn Jamison's corner.
Gillian McGee had UNE back on top in the 36th minute, having received a long downfield ball from
Amy Hatfield and hammering a shot from just beyond the top of the box past Bates' goalkeeper Sydney Litney in just two touches
(Watch).
A scoreless second half was disrupted when when Jamison sent a free kick past the outstretched arms of
Haley Coombs with under six minutes remaining, knotting the game at 2-2. UNE had one final shot on goal in the 88th minute, but was denied by Brady Jacobson, who handled goalkeeping duties for the Bobcats in the second half.
Shots on goal sided with the Nor'easters, 8-7, but total shots slightly favored Bates, 17-15. UNE had five corner kicks, including four in the second half, while the Bobcats received four.
UNE returns to Conference of New England action on Saturday, Sept. 27 with a visit to Roger Williams at noon.
