Nor'easters rally to earn CNE Tournament berth

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Brennan Chane scored with 4:02 remaining to snap a tie game and give the University of New England Nor'easters a thrilling 8-7 win over Curry College in Conference of New England men's lacrosse action Wednesday afternoon (Apr. 23) at Blue Bolt Field.

With the win the Nor'easters (8-9, 3-5 CNE) earned a spot in the upcoming CNE Tournament. UNE will be seeded sixth and travel to No. 3 University of Hartford for an opening-round game Saturday at 3 p.m. Fourth-seeded Roger Williams University will take on No. 5 Western New England University in the other first-round game, with No. 1 Endicott College and No. 2 Wentworth Institute of Technology receiving byes.

Trailing 7-6 with the clock winding down on the Nor'easters' season, Kyle Dunn scored with 5:24 left [Watch] to knot the contest and set the stage for Chane's game-winner a little more than a minute later [Watch]. UNE's defense would fend off the Colonels the rest of the way to preserve the victory.

Shea Fogarty notched a game-high three goals to pace the Nor'easters. He also handed out a pair of assists, including a helper on Chane's pivotal tally. Dunn and Stephen Fogarty each supported with two goals. 

Brody Dalzell and Jed Cappuccino scored two goals apiece to lead the Colonels' attack. 

Leading 5-2 at intermission, UNE opened the second-half scoring and appeared to have control of the match until Curry reeled off five consecutive markers to rally. Sebastian Reid scored with 8:31 remaining in the final quarter to give Curry its first lead of the afternoon at 7-6.

UNE's Evan Hazard had eight saves to earn the win. The senior goalkeeper recorded his 500th career save early in the third quarter to become the fourth Nor'easter to reach that milestone.
 

Ean LaRochelle played a strong game for the Nor'easters, winning 9 of 16 draws and corralling a match-best six ground balls. Chris Gottlieb led all players with four caused turnovers. 

UNE topped the visiting Colonels in shots (44-23), ground balls (35-29) and face-offs won (10-9), while successfully clearing 23 of 28 attempts.

Niko DeCola had 14 stops for Curry, which concluded its season with an overall record of 2-15 and mark of 2-6 in conference play.
