WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – A seven-goal third quarter helped No. 3 Hartford get past No. 6 University of New England in the opening round of the 2025 Conference of New England (CNE) Men's Lacrosse Championship on Saturday afternoon at Al-Marzook Field.
Jake Ojert and Ethan Hunt scored four goals apiece to help the Hawks (10-6) advance to the CNE semifinals, where they'll visit No. 2 Wentworth on Wednesday, April 30. UNE's season concludes with an 8-10 overall record.
Both sides combined for just four goals during the first half, with Hartford leading 3-1 at the break, before the Hawks' offense began clicking to the tune of four goals in the first five minutes of the third quarter. Hartford sprinkled three more goals down the stretch in the third, eventually taking a commanding 10-4 lead into the fourth.
Shea Fogarty and
Kyle Dunn accounted for all of UNE's scoring, with Fogarty's three goals leading the way.
Evan Hazard put together a 15-save performance in the cage for the Nor'easters.
Ben Costanzo was 15-for-19 in faceoffs, all while collecting a game-high nine groundballs, to help the Hawks maintain possession down the stretch. Hartford goalkeeper CJ Ledwick faced just nine shots on goal, finishing with four saves.
Hartford's first goal at the 10:36 mark of the opening quarter was the beginning of a lengthy drought for both sides, with the game's next goal coming with 4:12 remaining in the second. Fogarty answered that tally with his first of the game before Ojert scored with only seconds remaining before halftime to hand the Hawks a two-goal lead.
Dunn opened the second-half scoring, cutting Hartford's lead to 3-2, but the Hawks began to take control soon after with the beginning of a 7-1 run.
