BRISTOL, R.I. -- Roger Williams University defeated the University of New England in a pair of Conference of New England (CNE) softball games with scores of 16-1 (5 innings) and 6-3 on Thursday (Apr. 17) at Paolino Field.
The Hawks (17-9, 8-2 CNE) received a game-high three hits from Ashley Klingberg in the opener, while Hailey Williams and Shannon Starratt multiple hits in both contests, totaling four apiece. Starratt and Vianna Chamberlain each had two home runs on the afternoon. Starting pitchers Raegen Germano and Keira Quadros combined to record 19 of 25 outs by strikeout during their participation.
Hannah Irons and
Emma Michaud accounted for four of the five total hits for the Nor'easters (7-19, 1-9), and both went deep once over the course of the two games. Irons will take a six-game hitting streak into Saturday's twinbill at Wentworth Institute of Technology.
After a two-run shot by Chamberlain in the bottom of the 1st stanza in
GAME 1 (RWU 16-1), Roger Williams plated 13 runs on 18 batters in the 2nd to seize control. The rest of the team's four extra-base hits came in the frame, including a leadoff double from Kayleigh O'Connor, an RBI-triple by Jamie Wells, and a three-run blast off the bat of Starratt. Klingberg, Williams, and Caroline Thomas had multiple hits in the inning; Thomas' first drove in a pair.
Irons started the 4th for UNE with a home run to left -- her third of the season.
The combo of Germano (3.1) and Natalie Lundari (1.2) allowed just that one hit to the visitors.
Kara MacDonald took the loss for the Nor'easters.
UNE bounced right back, though, as
GAME 2 (RWU 6-3) got underway, seeing Michaud follow an Irons walk with her first career home run over the fence in center.
The defense recorded its first of two double plays to get out of the 1st with a lead, but the Hawks touched the plate four times in the 2nd to move ahead for good. Thomas opened with a double and scored on the ensuing play to get RWU on the board (2-1), and soon a two-run double by Williams broke up a tied game.
Michaud sliced the deficit in half (4-3) with an RBI-double to score
Hannah Lappin in the 3rd. Michaud now tops UNE with six multi-hit outings.
Starratt and Chamberlain went back-to-back in the Hawks 4th to give Quadros and Skye Merrow enough of a cushion to finish off the match from the circle. Quadros racked up 13 strikeouts over her six innings.
Starting pitcher
Lizzie Brytowski worked 3.1 innings in the setback for the Nor'easters. Reaching base for a sixth consecutive game,
Emma Koenig had the fourth hit by the squad -- a leadoff double in the 7th.
