BOSTON -- Wentworth Institute of Technology scored a combined three runs in the bottom of the 8th innings to edge the University of New England by scores of 2-1 and 3-2 in a Conference of New England (CNE) softball doubleheader on Saturday (Apr. 19) at Carr Diamond.
Katelin Howe and Lexi Lefkowski had hits in both contests for the Leopards (13-17, 3-7 CNE), while Jess Rowe and Julia Malowitz claimed the complete-game wins in the circle.
For the Nor'easters (7-21, 1-11),
Emma Michaud and
Elise Connor reached safely with hits in each match. UNE, which out-hit Wentworth by an 11-10 margin on the day, returns to action on Monday at home against Saint Joseph's College.
GAME 1 (WIT 2-1) went scoreless through regulation, as
Kara MacDonald and Rowe battled for their respective sides. The visitors were the first team to get a runner 60 feet away from scoring in the 4th, and soon had a couple in scoring position with one out, but could not convert.
Hannah Irons singled and eventually reached third base in the 6th, and Connor started the 7th with a single, but UNE still wasn't able to cash in. The Leopards then had a look to take it in the bottom of the 7th, with first and third and one away, however MacDonald got a strikeout and popout to force extras.
An RBI-double from Irons scored the tiebreaker runner to give the Nor'easters a lead, only to see a bunt single by Howe join the placed runner for the hosts and Lefkowski came through with a two-run double to walk-off with the result.
Rowe fanned seven without a walk for WIT, while MacDonald struck out four in the tough setback.
In
GAME 2 (WIT 3-2), right after
Cat Higgins eluded potential damage from a pair of two-out singles in the last half of the 1st, UNE got on the board in the 2nd when Connor doubled and
Emma Koenig singled. Koenig has reached base in seven straight outings.
Grace Riva supplied a two-out RBI-double to plate
Marissa Durette and gain a 2-0 cushion in the 5th, but Kyla Igawa's second hit erased the deficit for the Leopards in the 6th with a two-run double that plated Howe and Lefkowski. Igawa advanced to third on the first out of the frame, but an infield lineout and strikeout by Higgins prevented the go-ahead run.
The Nor'easters were unable to advance their placed runner in the top of the 8th, opening the door for a Wentworth sac bunt and then groundout by Igawa to score the deciding run.
Malowitz and Higgins both had four strikeouts from the circle.
