BIDDEFORD, Maine –
Stephen Fogarty netted a career-high six goals to help the University of New England men's lacrosse team cruise to a 17-5 Conference of New England victory over Gordon on a rainy Tuesday night at Blue Bolt Field.
Fogarty spaced his six tallies evenly with three in the first half and three in the second, helping the Nor'easters (7-8, 2-4 CNE) overcome an early 2-0 deficit and eventually take a 7-3 lead into halftime before outscoring Gordon (1-9, 0-6 CNE) 10-2 in the second half.
The Nor'easters' scoring contingent also featured three goals from
Shea Fogarty, along with two from both
Brennan Chane and
Finn McCoy.
Trot Smith posted his first career goal, UNE's last of the game, with just under four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter to become the eighth different Nor'easter in the scoring column (
Watch). The Fighting Scots, who received 15 saves from goalkeeper Colin Liscomb, were led by Nicolas Flemming's three goals.
Gordon's early 2-0 lead was erased at the 5:32 mark of the first quarter when Chane netted the equalizer as part of a 4-0 UNE run (
Watch). The Fighting Scots had an answer to cut the lead to 4-3, but that preceded a 5-0 Nor'easter spurt, which featured five different goal scorers.
A back-and-forth start to the third quarter, with both sides trading back-to-back goals, gave way to UNE scoring the game's last eight – all in the fourth quarter – to run away with its eighth straight win over Gordon, dating back to the 2016 season. 12 goals marked the Nor'easters' largest margin of victory over a conference opponent since 2017 (22-8 over Curry).
Winners of two of the last three, UNE heads to Roger Williams on Saturday, April 19 at noon for its final road date of the season.
