UNE rallies for win over Augsburg, 7-3

CLERMONT, Fla. -- After falling behind by three in the 2nd inning, the University of New England stormed back with seven runs in two frames to defeat Augsburg University, 7-3, in softball action on Monday (Mar. 17).

Marissa Durette connected for a three-run double to level the score in the Nor'easter 3rd, before a sac fly and error allowed two more runs to cross. Hannah Irons then tacked on another two in the bottom of the 4th, clocking her second home run in as many days (and career) to plate Hannah Lappin for the second time and set the margin at four.

Cat Higgins got out of a bases-loaded spot in the top of the 2nd with a groundout, and then retired 15 of the next 18 batters (3 free passes) to close the door on the Auggies. Two of Augsburg's three runs were earned against Higgins, who totaled seven strikeouts to win for the second straight start.

The Nor'easters (2-1) handed the Auggies their second loss in 11 outings (9-2), and it was the first setback in seven decisions for pitcher Morgan Paaske, who also fanned seven.

Irons was the only player in the game with two hits, and also scored twice.

Grace Syson supplied a two-run homer for Augsburg before an error made it 3-0.
