STANDISH, Maine – The University of New England men's lacrosse team took control in the third quarter, and despite three straight Saint Joseph's College of Maine goals late in Thursday evening's contest, the Nor'easters held on for an 8-6 road victory.
After a back-and-forth first half, UNE netted the first three goals of the third quarter to grab a 7-3 lead before three consecutive Monks tallies had the Nor'easters searching for a late insurance goal, which came in the form of
Preston Briggs' game-high fourth of the evening with 2:22 remaining.
Along with Briggs' four goals, the UNE attack was paced by
Shea Fogarty, who found the back of the net three times and added an assist.
Ben Gowell won 11-of-14 faceoffs and collected a game-high eight ground balls, and
Nate Hunt came up with a game-best five caused turnovers.
Evan Hazard racked up 17 saves in the cage for the Nor'easters.
Will Levesque and Brandon Cavicchi scored two goals apiece to power the Monks (0-1), who scored the game's first goal, but never led again after Fogarty leveled the score with his first goal of the night. Briggs and Fogarty traded goals with Saint Joseph's until, tied 3-3, the duo helped the Nor'easters rattle off four straight, capped off by
Stephen Fogarty's first of the season, to claim a 7-3 advantage with less than four minutes remaining in the third.
Zander Kirk, Cavicchi and Levesque each scored to help the Monks climb back within striking distance, but Briggs' late man-up tally was more than enough for the Nor'easters to close out the win.
Having previously defeated Husson in Saturday's season opener, UNE is off to a 2-0 start for the first time since 2020.
UNE is set to visit another intrastate foe on Saturday, Feb. 22, traveling to Maine Maritime for a noon start.
