BOSTON – A season-best five different Nor'easters scored in double figures as the University of New England women's basketball team cruised to a 76-38 road victory over Wentworth in Tuesday evening's Conference of New England clash in Tansey Gymasium.
Sydney Jenisch led the balanced UNE contingent with a game-high 14 points.
Ella Karavanic and
Mia Arcario scored 11 apiece, and Faye Vellieux and
Kaia Anderson had 10 each to round out the quintet. Tuesday's offensive output marked the first time the Nor'easters have had five in double figures since Feb. 6, 2024, when they picked up an 80-61 win at Curry.
UNE (12-10, 9-6 CNE) led wire-to-wire, scoring the game's first nine points before storming to a 32-15 halftime lead. The Nor'easters dominated the Leopards (2-20, 0-15 CNE), 23-6, during the third quarter, shooting 50 percent from the floor while holding the hosts to just two made field goals. UNE went on to expand its lead as large as 41 (72-31) in the fourth.
The Nor'easters racked up 17 steals, their most Feb. 1, 2023 (17 against Wentworth), as the Leopards committed 28 turnovers. Anderson had four of those takeaways, and Jenisch, Veilleux and
Gabby Soter had three apiece. Wentworth shot worse than 30 percent (12-of-42) against the stingy UNE defense.
Jenisch, who was the game's only player with multiple made 3-pointers (2-for-4), scored seven of her 14 points in the first quarter to guide UNE to a strong start. Domination in the middle periods was key in the lopsided win as Wentworth combined to put up just 13 points in the second and third quarters.
Now with back-to-back wins under their belts, the Nor'easters are back home on Saturday, Feb. 15 to host Nichols at 1 p.m.
